कुछ लोग धर्म और जाति के नाम पर लाखों लोगो का नुकसान और अपना फायदा लेते है। यह कहानी है एक गाँव पंबुपत्ती की जहाँ लोगों ने धर्म के नाम पर चल रहे भेद भाव को ख़त्म कर एक नयी परंपरा शुरू की। इस कहानी में प्रेम नाम का एक पात्र है।वो किसी एक गांव में रहता है।
एक दिन कई किलोमीटर दूर किसी गांव के मंदिर या मस्जिद के टूटने की खबर आती है और प्रेम के गांव के लोग बिना कारण के पागल हो जाते हैं। लोग दूसरे के घरों को आग लगाना शुरू कर देते हैं। प्रेम किसी तरह अपने गणेश भगवान की मूर्ति, थोड़े सिक्के और कुछ कपड़े लेकर गाँव चोर देता है। वो चलता रहता है और चलता ही रहता है, कभी बस पर तो कभी पैदल। बस में कोई टिकट खरीदने वाला नहीं था, सब लोग जैसे तैसे भागने वाले ही थे। चलते-चलते प्रेम पंबुपत्ती पहुंच जाता है। वहां पहुंचते ही वो बेहोश हो जाता है। जब वो होश में आता है तो पता है की एक उम्रदराज, उजली और लम्बी दाढ़ी वाला व्यक्ति उसे अपने हाथों से खिला रहा है और उसकी सेवा कर रहा है। प्रेम की हालत में सुधार आता है और वो चंगा हो जाता है।
वो उस बड़े व्यक्ति जिसे वो स्नेह से दादा कहता है पूछता है की कैसे पंबुपत्ती के लोग एक दूसरे के धर्म से ईर्ष्या न कर प्यार से रहते है! इस पर बूढ़ा उसे पंबुपत्ती की कहानी सुनाता है।
पुराने जमाने की बात है, पंबुपत्ती में सिर्फ सरीसृप (reptiles) रहते थे। जैसे कि मगरमच्छ (crocodile), छिपकली (lizard), सांप (snake), कुछुआ (tortoise)।सभी ख़ुशी से साथ में रहते थे। वहां हर महीने एक सभा (meeting) लगती थी जिसमे सभी आते थे। सभा का अध्यक्ष (president) सबसे बड़ा मगरमच्छ मकारा (नाम: makara) था। लोग उस से डर के कारण कुछ नहीं कहते थे।
एक दिन मीटिंग से एक सप्ताह पहले विशेष बात हई। मकारा ने सभी कछुओं को पत्र के जरिये मीटिंग में आने से मना कर दिया था। कछुओं के हेड “अहिस्तेय” को यह बात बुरी लगी। पर वो कर भी क्या सकते थे, कछुओं की संख्या काफी काम थी और मगरमच्छ बहुत शक्तिशाली थे।
सभा में मकारा ने बताया की कछुआ अच्छा प्राणी नहीं है – कौन प्राणी है जो इतना धीरे धीरे चलता है, और अपनी पीठ पर अपने घर को लिए रखता है।
कुछ लोग खुश भी थे क्योंकि कछुओं के जाने से जगह में बढ़ोतरी और खाने पीने में भी बढ़ोतरी होने वाली थी.
कहने को जो भी हो, कछुओं को 7 दिनों का समय मिला और, वे चले गए.
कछुओं का प्रस्थान
कुछ दिनों बाद एक अजीब बात हुई, बाकि लोगों को कुछ दुर्गन्ध (Bad Smell) आणि शुरू हुई – ये दुर्गन्ध थी फलो के जमीन पर सड़ने की और पानी में जानवरों के मृत शरीर की. ये वो चीज़े थी जिसे कछुए खाते थे.
अगले महीने नया वाक्या हुआ, इस बार साँपों को सभा में नहीं बुलाया गया और उसे एक दिन में जंगल छोड़ने का आदेश दे दिया गया. मकारा ने बताया की साप चिप-चिपे होते है और कोई नहीं जानता की कब वो गुस्से में आकर अपना विष उगल दें.
बाकि जानवर मकारा के डर से फिर कुछ नहीं बोले और कुछ जानवर खुश भी थे क्योंकि अब उन्हें साँपों का कोई दर नहीं था.
कुछ हफ्तों बाद अजीब बात हुई, चूहों की सख्या काफी बढ़ गयी क्योंकि सांपों के बाद वाला कोई नहीं था. चूहों ने सभी छिपकलियों और मगमच्छों के अंडे और छोटे बच्चो को खा गए. यहाँ तक की मकारा के अंडे भी.
तभी मकारा को एक बात सूझी। उसने सभी बुलाई और कहा की क्यों न जंगल में सिर्फ मरमछ रहे, छिपकलियों को कौन पसंद करता है, उनकी आदतें अस्चर्यालगा तरह (strange) की है और वो अपना रंग भी बदलती है.
अब तक सभी मगरमच्छ मकारा हुए थे. सभी ने तालियां बजायी और ख़ुशी जाहिर किया।
कुछ ही दिनों में सभी छिपकलियां अपने बच्चों समेत पंबुपत्ती से चले गए.
जानवरों की पंबुपत्ती में वापसी
यह समय मगरमच्छों के लिए बहुत ख़राब था. कोई समझ नहीं पा रहा था कि क्यों ऐसा हो रहा है। सभी मकारा की तरफ देखते हैं. मकर हुआ और भयभीत लगता है. मकर उन लोगों से किसी तरह जान छुड़ाता है क्योंकि सभी जान चुके थे की मकारा को भी दर लगता है.
सभी मगरमच्छ बाकि जनवाओं को आने का बुलावा भेज देते हैं. कुछ ही दिनों ने पंबुपट्टी पहले जैसा हो जाता है और हर तरफ खुशहाली आ जाती है.

In the village of Prem, there happened a violent right. People were killing other villagers and were putting their homes on fire. In Pambubatti Prem saw the love and care of peoples toward others. So he wanted to live with love and was not wanting to see his own village.
3. Why did Makara dislike tortoises, snakes and lizards? Write a line about each.
Tortoises: Makara told that tortoises are very slow walkers and carry theirs together with them. No other organism carry their homes with them.
Snakes: Snakes are slimy; they have venomous teeth which they can use any time during anger or rage. These poisonous venous can kill anyone even in minute quantities.
Lizards: Lizards have strange habits; they change their colour, sometimes red sometimes green.
4. What went wrong when the tortoises, snakes and lizards left the forest?
Tortoise eats rotten fruits and dead animals. When tortoises left the forest, there was foul smell everywhere due to the rotting of fruits and dead animals.
Snakes eat rats. Rats are very annoying animals. They eat eggs of animals, fruits and vegetables.
Lizards: Lizards eat lava of frogs and insects. When they left the forest there was an abrupt increase in the number of frogs and insects. Frogs ate the eggs and small kids of the crocodile.

The story of Pambubatti tells us that people live happily and without problems when people care for each other irrespective of their caste and religion.
