Ant lives in harmony with other ants, grubs, and other organisms. They do not fight with each other and remain dedicated to their work.  So, we say an ant’s life is peaceful.

1. How long does it take for a grub to become a complete ant?

Answer: Grubs feed for 3 to 4 weeks then turn into a cocoon. A cocoon lives in a dormant state and does not eat or move for three weeks. Young ants come out from cocoon and take training for a few weeks. Only after this, they become a complete ant. So, the time is taken by grub to become complete and is about ten weeks.

2. Why do the worker ants carry the grubs about?

Worker ants carry them for airing, exercise, and sunshine.

3. What jobs are new ants trained for?

Ants take training and become workers, soldiers, builders, and cleaners.

4. Name some other creatures that live in anthills.

Beetles, lesser breeds of ants, greenfly, etc. live together with ants.

5. Mention three things we can learn from the ‘tiny teacher’. Give reasons for choosing these items.

Live with peace; no fighting; always dedicated to work and duty; Living with discipline are the three things we can learn from ants.

The Tiny Teacher Exercise solution

Discuss the following topics in groups.
1. (i) What problems are you likely to face if you keep ants as pets?

Answer: They may eat our food or spoil it.

They may bite us.

(ii) When a group of bees finds nectar, it informs other bees of its location, quantity, etc. through dancing. Can you guess what ants communicate to their fellow ants by touching one another’s feelers?

Bees inform fellow bees through dancing. Ants touch antenna or feelers of other ant and communicate about the presence of the food.

2. Complete the following poem with words from the box below.

Meaning of lesser breeds of ants:  These are other types of ants that live in an anthill.

Honeydew: Honeydew is a sweet juice from Greenfly. It is like cow’s milk. Ants keep greenfly in their anthills for this juice. Touching of the antenna of greenfly stimulates the secretion of juice.
