How are lungs designed in human beings to maximize the area of exchange for gases

Lungs have numerous sac or a balloon-like structure called alveoli. These alveoli are supplied with a dense network of blood vessels. These alveoli increase the surface area many times.  High surface area facilitates faster diffusion of oxygen from lungs to blood and carbon dioxide from the blood to lungs.
