Activity 8.4 Class 10 Science How do Organisms Reproduce
Brief procedure: Activity asks us to put green filamentous mould of stagnant water in a microscope, and observe the structure of spirogyra filament.
Observation: We see small fragments of Spirogyra in the microscope.
Explanation: Spirogyra is a filamentous green alga. It is commonly found in fresh water. Its long filament breaks into smaller filament and develops into new filament. We call this mode of reproduction as Fragmentation.
Extras: Fragmentation and regeneration are some related terms but there are some differences. Fragmentation is a mode of reproduction while regeneration is the growth of some part or the whole body. Regeneration occurs due to accidental breakage in some organism.
