Why is the use of iodised salt advisable

Iodine is an essential constituent of thyroxin hormone. Thyroxin plays a vital role in the body’s growth and metabolism.

Types of thyroxin

  • T2: Di Iodo Thyronine
  • T3: Tri Iodo Thyronine
  • T4: Tetra Iodo Thyronine

Deficiency of iodine leads to inefficient production of thyroxin, which result in many metabolic symptoms like fatigue, obesity, temperature sensitivity etc.

Absence of iodine increases the workload on the thyroid gland. It results in swelling of the thyroid, which we call ‘goitre’.

In older times, people were not aware of the importance of iodine. As a result, goitre was very common among them.

Government promotes the use of iodised salt. So, now we hardly see any person with goitre.
