Activity 9.6 Class 9 Science Force and Laws of MotionWhat activity asks?

Activity 9.6 asks us to heat the water of the test tube and see its movement when cork blows.

Observation:

When cork blows, the test-tube moves in the opposite direction.

Explanation:

Why cork blows out?

When we heat the test tube, water in it expands and changes into vapors. Vapors have higher volume and start exerting pressure on the cork. As a result, a time comes when the cork blows-out.

Why the test-tube recoils?

Recoiling of test-tube is similar to the recoiling of the gun after firing or moving of cart in activity 9.4. Here, the movement of cork creates an equal and opposite reaction as per Newton’s third law of motion.

As per second law:

F = ma

so, mcork x acork = mtest-tube x atest-tube
