Activity 8.3 Class 9 Science Chapter 8 Motion

What activity asks?

The activity 8.3 asks us to measure the distance between two opposite corners of a basketball ground by walking through its corner and compare it with the displacement.

Observation:

The distance measured from walking through the corner is more than the measured displacement.

Explanation:

The distance is the total path length covered by the object. Here we move along the corner, so the total distance covered becomes the length of the court and breadth of the court which equals 94+50 feet (114 feet).

The magnitude of the displacement is the shortest possible distance between two points. Here it represents the diagonal length of the court. By Pythagoras theorem, it equals to 106.47 feet.

 

Inference:

Activity 8.3 teaches us the difference between the distance and the displacement.

Note: Displacement is a vector quantity. It means it also has a direction. If we level the corner of the court as aA, B, C, D, and a person walks from A to C then the direction of displacement is A to B.
