What activity asks?

Activity 10.5 asks us to put an iron nail and a wooden cork on the surface of the water and see what happens.

Observation:

Iron nail sinks to the bottom while cork floats on the surface.

Explanation:

Objects on water displace some water as per its surface volume. The displaced water exerts an upward force. If this force is higher, then the weight of the object viz. in case of cork, the objects float on the surface.

If the weight of the object is more than the weight of the displaced liquid viz iron nail, the object sinks at the bottom.

Fact:

This upthrust is applicable in every two immiscible medium. We call this buoyancy. It was Archimedes who first observed this phenomenon.
